Learn Internet Marketing

How to Make Money Online

Let’s be honest. There’s a lot of crap on the internet about how to make money online.

Fortunately, it’s not as complicated as most people make it out to be.

The problem is that some internet marketers put so much B.S. out there that people get confused, they get overwhelmed and they don’t know what steps to take to actually get the results they want.

So, here’s a simplified breakdown of the internet marketing process.

1

Start an Online Business

First, you gotta have a business, or at least an idea for your business. That way, you know what market to target. Your business may change and evolve as you grow, but you’ll learn more if you focus on making money from the very beginning.

Of course, if you want to make money online, you have to sell something. That could be advertising, affiliate products, an ebook, software, a membership course, a physical product, or even a service.

Decide what business you want to get into and jump in head first.

2

Do Market Research and Keyword Research

Next comes research. You can’t be good at what you do unless you know your business inside and out.

You need to research your market so that you understand what people in your market really want. Find out what they want, need and desire, then give it to them.

When you do your research you also want to look at your competition. If there’s too much competition in your market, you might want to find a narrow niche within that market so you can sidestep the competition. You can always expand later, but if you want to get in quick, consider focusing on a narrow niche.

Don’t forget about keyword research. Keywords are simply words that people type in at Google to find stuff online. If you want to get traffic from search engines, you need to identify targeted keywords and use them as part of your SEO strategy.

3

Understand SEO

That brings us to SEO, search engine optimization. SEO is composed of 3 parts. First, you need a solid structure for your website to ensure that search engine robots can easily crawl your pages and read everything. If you’re using WordPress, you’re probably good to go.

Second is on-page SEO. On-page SEO is using keywords in the right places on your website. Places like the title, the headings, within the content, as categories, as internal links, and so on.

The third part of SEO is off-page SEO, which is backlinks. Backlinks are links from other websites to your website. The more high-quality backlinks you have, the better results you will see in the search engines.

4

Create Content For Your Website

After you’ve done your research, and now that you understand SEO, it’s time to create the content for your website. Good content is crucial. If your content sucks, there’s no reason for people to visit or stay on your website.

Make sure the content is focused on helping people. Be clear about what you have to offer, how you can help them, and what you want visitors to do on your website.

For example, if you want people to sign up for your email list, then that should be the focus of your content. If you want people to buy your software, then make that the focus of your website.

Create content for your website that highlights what you have to offer and how it can benefit your visitors. It’s not about you, it’s about how you can help people that visit your website.

5

Build Your Website

When you create your content first, it makes it a lot easier to choose a website design that serves your content. Don’t make the mistake of choosing a website design then just filling in the blanks.

Choose a nice website design that allows you to present your content in the way you want. Don’t choose a website design just because it looks cool if it doesn’t work for your content. The design should serve your content, not the other way around.

Thanks to WordPress, anyone can build a website. You don’t need to know how to code, you don’t need to know how to use Dreamweaver. WordPress makes it super-easy to build a website, not just a blog, but any kind of website.

It might take you a little while to figure out how to install WordPress, how to set it up properly, how to change things the way you want, but, honestly, it’s pretty damn easy.

6

Get Website Traffic

This is where a lot of people get stuck. There are millions of websites out there, how do you get people to visit yours?

Well, the simple answer is you can create awesome content, buy advertising, you can use SEO to rank high in the search engine results, you can write guest posts, you can do article marketing, you can use social media, you can use email marketing, you can join groups, you can use forums, you can create videos, you can network, you can have contests, you can do anything that will attract people to your website.

You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to website traffic. Find out where your target market is and be a part of the conversation. Provide great information. Be helpful. Be visible. Be creative. Be persistent. If getting traffic were easy, everyone would be successful.

7

Start Making Money Online

Once you start getting traffic to your website, then you need to focus on how to convert visitors into buyers. If you’re building a business, the main purpose is to generate income. That doesn’t mean take advantage of your visitors. If you’re providing something of value for them, then there’s nothing wrong with charging for it. Provide a solution for their problems and get paid for your work. It’s a win-win situation.

As far as how you make money online, that depends on your business. You can sell advertising, sell physical products, sell information products, sell software, sell subscriptions, sell memberships, provide a service, ask for donations or anything else you can think of that people are willing to pay for.

8

Analyze and Test Your Results

Analytics is just a fancy way of saying – find out what works best.

The whole purpose of analytics is to find out what generates the most amount of money possible. That’s what a business is about, right?

For example, let’s say you have a website and you get a decent amount of traffic. Your primary method of making money is from Google Adsense – advertising. You make $500 per month with AdSense.

But, you decide to test a different model for a month. You take down the advertisements and you put up a few affiliate products. With the affiliate products, you end up making $750 per month. Which model would you use going forward?

You can test just about anything. Sales pages, advertising placement, products, copy, email click-through-rates, email sign-up forms, and on and on. The key is to keep all of the elements the same except for the element you want to test. That way, you can be pretty confident that the results were a direct result of the change you made.

With testing, you don’t have to wonder what will work best, you just test it and let the numbers guide you. Are you wondering whether you should use a pop-up form or not? Test it and look at the numbers. Wondering where you should put your ads for the best click-through-rate? Test it and look at the numbers.

You don’t have to guess at what works best. Test it, look at the results and let the numbers guide you.

9

Forget The Rules

I’m gonna go out on a limb and add one final piece to the puzzle. Now that you know the rules, forget them. I don’t mean that literally – you still need to understand all the fundamental principles involved in building an online business. But, you need to think outside the box if you want extraordinary results.

If you do the same thing everyone else does, in the same way everyone else does, you’ll get the same results – average.

Being unique is a good thing. Don’t just follow the rules, create your own rules. If you don’t like the way something is done, or something isn’t working for you, feel free to create an entirely new method that works. Don’t limit yourself because “that’s how it’s done.”

You don’t have to invent something totally original and unique. History is full of examples of people that simply put a new spin on an old concept.

Apple didn’t invent the cellphone, but they broke the rules and created something different. Not just different, but better.

Facebook wasn’t the first social network, but they broke the rules and changed the game.

Netflix wasn’t the first company to rent movies, but they broke the rules and decided to deliver movies through mail. It worked.

Regardless of whether you’re selling shoes or info products, there are opportunities for you to break the rules and stand out from the pack. Don’t just be different for the sake of being different, be different because it makes sense. Always remember that it’s not about you, it’s about the value you bring to the world.
